There are over a million words in the English language. And yet, a single word can
change a mood, start a movement, or bring people together. A word can inspire, persuade, comfort. Words allow us to express ideas, tell stories, resolve conflict and build understanding. But to use words in these ways, we must first acquire them. That's one of the reasons that reading is so important- it's the catalyst that helps us gather the words that we need to express ourselves, tell our stories, and understand one another.
At Words Have Power, our mission is to inspire young people to read and to help them fall in love with books and words.
That's why I am thrilled to invite young readers and writers to participate in our
"What Can You Do with a Word?' essay challenge and show the incredible power just one word can hold.
To inspire these essays, we encourage children to read The Word Collector by peter H. Reynolds, a story about a boy who gathers words the way that others collect rocks or stamps. Just like the character in the book we want every child to see themselves as a word
collector.
